University Boat Race
The world famous boat race between the two 'Blues', Oxford University and Cambridge is a worthwhile spectacular to enjoy while in London.
Taking place between March and April, the boat race features Cambridge (the light blues) and Oxford (the dark blues) duelling over a 4.2 mile (6.8 km) course that covers a stretch of the Thames river from Putney to Mortlake.
The famous nautical event, which has been held annually since 1829, creates a superb atmosphere. Riverside restaurants and bars that line the course invite you in with festivities and special offers throughout the build-up and aftermath of the race.
Being in Hammersmith is the ideal location to catch the drama in the closing stages of the race. Looking onto the Harrods Depository you will catch the crews determinedly pushing through overwhelming exhaustion as they come to the most crucial point of the boat race.
When the crews reach the Hammersmith Bridge the advantage of the Surrey Bend starts to come into play and over the years 80% of crews ahead at Hammersmith go on to win.
The finish is actually located just before the Chiswick Bridge, which is a 5-minute walk from Hammersmith. However, Hammersmith Bridge is a key location with a great vantage point to witness these amazing athletes at a decisive point, for an experience like no other.
